Located in Auburn, Ala., the store took its name from Sheldon Toomer, an 1893 graduate of Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical College (now Auburn University). Subsequent owners included McAdory Lipscomb, also an AU graduate and brother of Lan Lipscomb, owner of Lipscomb's Drug Store in the same block. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
